What is PAT testing?

Portable appliance testing combines inspection with appropriate electrical tests to assess the condition of equipment. It focuses on portable electrical equipment, plugs and cables.

Inspection and testing

The work considers the equipment, plugs and cables, together with tests appropriate to the appliance. Visual inspection matters: some faults can be found by looking, while others need testing. Tell Paul about the equipment and its working environment so the scope can be agreed.

How often should appliances be tested?

There is no blanket legal requirement for every appliance to have an annual PAT test. Inspection and testing intervals should reflect equipment type, use, environment and previous findings.
